Move-In Cleaning Checklist: What to Clean Before Unpacking

Published on February 5, 2025

Moving is one of life's most stressful events — and it doesn't matter whether you're relocating across town from Hamilton to Stoney Creek or making a bigger move into the Niagara region from the GTA. One thing that can make the transition smoother is moving into a truly clean home. Even if the previous owners tidied up before handing over the keys, there's almost always more cleaning to do.

Here at West Niagara Cleaning, we've helped hundreds of families across Beamsville, Grimsby, St. Catharines, Smithville, Jordan, and Vineland start fresh in their new homes. We've put together this room-by-room checklist so you know exactly what to tackle — whether you're doing it yourself or hiring us to handle it for you.

Why Clean Before You Unpack?

It might be tempting to start unpacking right away, but cleaning first has major advantages:

  • It's easier with empty rooms. Without furniture and boxes in the way, you can reach every corner, baseboard, and cabinet interior.
  • You can spot issues. Cleaning gives you a close look at the condition of walls, floors, and fixtures. You may notice things the home inspection missed — a slow drain, a cracked tile, or mold under a sink.
  • It's a fresh start. There's something deeply satisfying about putting your belongings into a home that's been cleaned to your own standards.

The Room-by-Room Checklist

Kitchen

The kitchen is usually the most labour-intensive room. Previous occupants may have left grease buildup, crumbs in drawers, or sticky residue inside cabinets.

  • Wipe down all cabinet interiors and exteriors
  • Clean inside the oven, including racks
  • Clean the stovetop, drip pans, and range hood filter
  • Wipe down the interior and exterior of the refrigerator
  • Run an empty cycle in the dishwasher with a cleaning tablet or vinegar
  • Clean inside the microwave
  • Scrub the sink and polish the faucet
  • Wipe down countertops and backsplash
  • Clean light fixtures and switch plates
  • Sweep and mop the floor, paying attention to corners and under the kick plates

Bathrooms

Bathrooms need thorough sanitization. In many older Niagara homes — especially those built in the 1950s through 1980s — you'll find tile grout that has seen better days and fixtures with hard water deposits. Hamilton and St. Catharines in particular are known for hard water, so mineral buildup on showerheads and faucets is common.

  • Scrub and disinfect the toilet inside and out, including behind the base
  • Clean the bathtub and/or shower enclosure, including grout lines
  • Remove hard water stains from showerheads (soak in vinegar overnight if needed)
  • Clean the vanity, sink, and faucet
  • Wipe down the mirror
  • Clean inside the medicine cabinet and vanity drawers
  • Wipe down light fixtures, exhaust fan cover, and towel bars
  • Scrub the floor, especially around the base of the toilet and behind the door
  • Check for mold or mildew around caulking and address it with a mold-specific cleaner

Bedrooms

  • Wipe down all closet shelves and rods
  • Clean closet floors (vacuum carpet or wipe hard floors)
  • Dust windowsills, blinds, and curtain rods
  • Clean interior window glass
  • Wipe down baseboards
  • Dust or wipe ceiling fan blades and light fixtures
  • Vacuum carpet thoroughly (consider renting a carpet cleaner for deep stains) or mop hard floors
  • Check and clean heating vents or baseboard heaters — Ontario forced-air systems collect dust quickly

Living Areas and Hallways

  • Dust all surfaces, including built-in shelving and mantels
  • Clean all windows and window tracks
  • Wipe down baseboards throughout
  • Clean light switches and door handles (high-touch surfaces)
  • Vacuum or mop all flooring
  • Clean the inside of the fireplace surround if applicable (many Niagara homes have gas or wood fireplaces)
  • Dust stairway railings and balusters

Laundry Room

  • Wipe down the washer drum and door seal (front-loaders are prone to mildew)
  • Clean the dryer lint trap housing
  • Wipe down shelves and countertops
  • Clean the utility sink if present
  • Sweep and mop the floor

Entryway, Mudroom, and Garage

Ontario weather makes the entryway a high-traffic zone for dirt, salt, and moisture, especially between October and April. If your new home has a mudroom, give it extra attention.

  • Sweep and mop the entryway floor
  • Wipe down the front door inside and out
  • Clean the coat closet interior
  • If there's a mudroom, clean any bench storage, hooks, and cubbies
  • Sweep the garage floor and wipe down any shelving

Basement

Many Niagara homes have finished or partially finished basements. Don't overlook this space.

  • Check for any signs of moisture or musty odors (common after the spring thaw)
  • Vacuum or mop all flooring
  • Wipe down window wells and basement windows
  • Clean the sump pump area if accessible
  • Dust furnace vents and cold air returns
  • Wipe down handrails on the basement stairs

Don't Forget These Often-Missed Spots

  • Inside the dishwasher filter
  • Top of the refrigerator
  • Behind the toilet tank
  • HVAC vents and return air grilles throughout the house
  • Garage door opener buttons and light switches
  • Inside the pantry
  • The tops of door frames and closet shelves

Should You DIY or Hire a Professional?

A full move-in clean for a typical three-bedroom home takes most people an entire day — sometimes longer. That's where we come in. Our move-in cleaning service starts at $250 and covers everything on this checklist and more. We'll have your new home sparkling before the moving truck arrives, so you can focus on the exciting part — making the space your own.
